Chapter 9

The night descended into a jumble. Fatigue was claiming every millimetre of my body making movement difficult and when I stopped moving, sleep wanted to zip me up tight.

The talk in the room became harder to follow, but I remember Renata and I left with Louis. For a moment, as we stepped outside the room I felt there was mountain air to breathe and freedom to savour, though we were only in the hallway and the music was thump, thumping beneath us. It revived me a moment and I kept Renata company in the small bedroom with ensuite while she tried to repair her appearance. Louis left us but was back in a few minutes with a cleaner’s dust coat that Renata objected to and then slipped over her tattered dress.

We went downstairs but at the bottom, instead of turning left and leaving the way we’d come, we turned right and almost immediately there was a door which opened onto a small staff car park.

“I told you there was a side door,” I mumbled to Renata and she laughed for the first time in days. Louis sat me in the back of his luxurious car, strapped me in and I was asleep before it moved. Later, I remember a very flash hotel lobby and having to concentrate to sign my name, a lift, a room in which I fell on the bed, and that was it.
